ISA vs TRAQ: What Is the Difference?
Comparing the ISA Certified Arborist credential with the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ). Which one do you need, and when?
Getting your ISA credentials involves some logistics and upfront costs. Unlike some other trades where you just show up and test, the ISA has a strict application and vetting process.
Here is everything you need to know about the costs and how to get your date on the calendar.
Exam Costs: Member vs. Non-Member
The ISA incentivizes membership.
- ISA Member Fee: ~$170 USD.
- Non-Member Fee: ~$280 USD.
- ISA Membership Cost: Typically ~$150-$170/year (varies by chapter).
- The Math: If you are planning to buy the study guide ($90 vs $130) and take the exam, membership usually pays for itself immediately. Plus, you get access to CEUs later.
Testing Centers vs. Paper Exams
You have two options for taking the test:
- Computer-Based Testing (Pearson VUE):
- Pros: Schedule any day/time that works for you. Instant results. Quiet environment.
- Cons: $125 administrative fee (on top of exam fee).
- Paper-Based Testing (Chapter Exams):
- Pros: No extra admin fee.
- Cons: Fixed dates (usually on weekends). Results take 4-6 weeks to arrive by mail.
The 90-Day Window
Once your application is approved, you are given a 90-day authorization window.
- You must take the exam within this window.
- If you fail to schedule or show up, you forfeit your fee.
- Extension: You can usually purchase a 90-day extension for ~$50 if life happens.
Rescheduling Rules
If you are taking the computer-based exam with Pearson VUE:
- > 24-48 hours notice: You can usually reschedule for free or a small fee.
- < 24 hours notice: You forfeit the exam fee.
- Tip: Do not wait until the night before to check your location.
Recertification Costs
Passing is just the start. To keep your credential, you must:
- Pay a recertification fee every 3 years.
- Earn 30 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
- If you don't pay or don't earn the CEUs, you have to retake the exam.
